| BOARD OF
TRUSTEES Jerry D. Fain, M.D. Oncology/Hematology/Internal Medicine, Southwest Regional Cancer Centers, Austin, Texas Dr. Fain is an unending scientific researcher and has an innate ability to integrate data (which I believe few recognize unless they are also scientists) but he is gifted with an incredible compassion for human life and feelings. He does not challenge; he questions for discourse. A graduate of The University of Texas at Galveston Medical Branch, he went on to his residency in internal medicine, and further Fellowships in oncology and hematology in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. There are times when it is impossible to apply words in order to give others an impression. Primarily, because words limit and confine. For example, if one says "There's a falcon." Many of us think of a large bird with a large wing span. However, none of the intrinsic phenomena in that bird can be appreciated. That is how difficult it is to write about Dr. Fain. Only the comments of others could begin to describe him, "I told him you said to give him a hug, and he put his arms out...!" "He held my hands, together in his, and I knew that we would get through this somehow." "I knew he would not leave me, if I needed him." Such are the qualities everyone with cancer needs in an oncologist. Life is never certain, and knowing that the end comes for all of us, its far easier to have optimum health, whatever one's actual physical condition, if one can trust, and feel totally open, and honest with their doctor . . . and that s/he does care. A physician of his word, Dr. Fain comes from a family of physicians, and is the first to specialize. His father, Allen Fain, M.D., Family Practice, was Dallas County's Health Commissioner, and apparently a model for his son, Jerry, because Dr. Allen Fain's kindness, ability to get things done, respecting the health needs of everyone, remembering his colleagues, and his friends, is evident in Jerry, his son. Dr. Jerry Fain was invited to participate in the founding of this organization because of his competency, ethics, and priorities in his life: God, his family, and his patients. A gentle person, like his father, he is trusted by everyone, and represents the true spirit of PROJECT! OUTREACH.. With his faith in the forefront, he does not hesitate to state that all he wants in life is to be able to go home at night, knowing his patients are not in pain, and play with "his special girls;" his spouse, also a physician, their little girl and now a newborn son. An individual accompanying a chemo patient for the first infusion remarked: "I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen him (caring for a patient)." Many have said, "If I ever get cancer, I know who my oncologist will be - and that is a great feeling!" He outshines every oncologist that I investigated, and/or interviewed in every way. The most this physician receives is the least he deserves. |
